CHAPTER FOURTEEN

LEADS AND TANGLES

Hostile eyes followed them as they stepped out of the Toto. Sarah squared her shoulders as no fewer than three Mykrin hissed as they spotted her. Apparently, humans were even less popular here than they were elsewhere in the galaxy. Or maybe there was something else going on. Tinman placed a hand on her shoulder and squeezed. "Just remember, this was your idea."

"And I may eventually regret it," Sarah acknowledged. "But we have to find her somehow..."

Tinman simply nodded. She'd gotten to know him, in someways least well. She knew some of his secrets, but who he was was more shuttered even than Scarecrow. Scarecrow was the thinker on the crew. Lion? Lion was the doer. What did that make Tinman? Other than a puzzle. It was a question she had little answer to, like so many of the other questions she had about the world she had entered. The threads were there but she could not, or dared not, follow them. One had led them here, so perhaps those other threads would require her to follow them, eventually. Munchir had been fanciful. The Lady's lands stately. This place looked... wild.

Tangles of forest came right up to the edge of the port, and it took her a moment to realize that the forest itself was part of the city. For only the Port itself and a single sector stood out and the rest of the 'city' was nestled within the embrace of the trees. Usually about forty feet up, as far as she could tell. She supposed it made sense for a species who could fly, but what did they do with their wounded or those too old or young to fly? She kept the thoughts to herself. She didn't know if the Mykrin had Mythics or their Mythics could read minds, but it seemed like a poor idea to take any chances with the matter.

"You're doing fine," Lion murmured to her.

"I feel a bit cowardly hiding behind all of you, given what my main Mythic seems to be." She admitted for his ears only and he shook his head, to her surprise.

"You're our ace in the hole and honestly? If they wanted you, they'd swarm you under Mythic or no. They don't like humans. Near as we can tell, there was a war a very long time ago and Mykrin don't forget. They'd probably have gotten farther if they didn't hold quite so much of a grudge — against each other as much as outsiders honestly," Lion shrugged and kept walking. There was a smattering of other races, mostly Ogrin, but some of Lion's people, a few Scarcar, and some of the other races she'd only nominally encountered walked the streets. That they were being treated with almost as much hostility — almost — was a little reassuring, but only a little.

"Where from here?" Sarah asked in a small voice.

"We'd hoped you'd know..." Lion admitted. "but immediately. There's an Inn run by an Ogrin who doesn't
